HUNGARIAN RAIL WORKERS STRIKE AGAIN. Railway workers launched
an indefinite strike at midnight on 1 February after
negotiations with the Hungarian State Railway Company (MAV)
that lasted some 160 hours failed to break a deadlock on
wages and collective contracts, Hungarian media report. The
railway workers' trade unions proposed a 10.78 percent wage
increase and agreed to some 800 people being laid off this
year, but MAV rejected those proposals. Railway workers had
staged a 60-hour strike on 10-12 January (see "RFE/RL
Newsline," 10 January 2000), which resulted in MAV losing
some 350 million forints ($1.4 million). MSZ
