There were over 200 reconized separate ethnicities in former Roumania,
many of which are exercising freedom in getting in touch with their
counterparts in other countries. It is wonderful to me that so many
people could have retained their own heritages while getting along with
each other in Roumania for so many centuries. The Old Believer Orthodox
there have enjoyed their rights since the original time of their
persecution in Russia. The Albanian population has thrived and the
Romani are treated better there than in any other eastern euripean
country. Let's hear it for Roumania and a kinder, gentler attitude
toward nationality and ethnicity throughout its history!

Anniversary this year, on the 14th of September (Saturday, from

Street, Mountain View (in the San Francisco Bay Area). All interested

Ethnic Foods and World-famous Tokay wines, please come!

        msg (408) 920-1700, fax (408)746-2765
Background: 1996 is the 1100th anniversary of Hungary, the
establishment of this Finno-Ugric island, in a sea of Slavic and
Germanic European nations. Hungary's oval shaped plane is
surrounded by the Carpathian mountains. This used to be the eastern
border of the Roman Empire and of European Christianity. Arpad's
seven tribes, the Magyars (about half a million) crossed the
Carpathians in 896 A.D. They were masterful equestrian archers,
used powerful composite bows to propel their arrows. The families
followed in carts, drawn by giant Hungarian oxen. Behind them came
their animals, herded and protected by the Hungarian dogs: the puli,
the komondor and the kuvasz. In the evenings, they would settle
down around their campfires. After the meal, they would drink
kumiss made from the mare's milk, to get them in the mood for their
ancient pentatonic tunes (which Bela Bartok collected a millennium
later). God had promised this land to the Hungarians. It all happened
while Queen Emese was asleep: God, in the form of the Turul bird,
impregnated her and told her, that the son to be born of this dream,
will lead her people to a promised land. The son was named Almos
(The Dreamed One), and it was he, who has brought his people to
these eastern slopes of the Carpathian mountain range. The decision
of the Taltos was that Almos must not enter the promised land! He is
to be sacrificed before the Magyars cross the Carpathians. This is
partly to appease God and partly to allow his spirit to enter his son,
Arpad, who will be the new ruler of all Hungarians. The head of the
first Hungarian dynasty, Arpad, had the task of establishing his
authority over the region. .Once the North and South were safe,
Arpad focused on Transdanubia. By the summer of 900 A.D. the
whole Carpathian Basin was in the hands of the Magyars. During the
coming centuries Hungary became the first melting pot of the world,
where many people lived, under the leadership of the Magyars.
Hungary welcomed every race, culture and religion into her tolerant,
open and highly decentralized society. After becoming Christians, the
Hungarians defended Europe from many Asian invasions, gave many
Saints to the Roman Church, and established many institutions,
including Europe's oldest educational monastery: Pannonhalma. On
the 6th of September, the Pope led the celebration of the 1000th
anniversary of Pannonhalma's founding. Woodside Priory in San
Francisco Bay Area is a shining example of the Hungarian Educator
Spirit; founded by Benedictine Fathers from Pannonhalma, a year
after they had to flee Hungary when Revolution against Soviets were
crushed in 1956. The Kingdom of Hungary reached her peak in the
middle ages. At the time, when Columbus was getting ready to sail
for America, Hungary's population matched that of England, her
armies were the strongest in Europe, the library of Buda was one of
the best in the world and her king, Matthias Corvinus was the Holy
Roman Emperor. During the coming centuries, Hungary was
weakened, as she bled for two centuries, in protecting Europe from
the Turks. In the struggle, she lost half her population and in that
exhausted state, she fell prey to occupiers from both East and West.
Hungary lost most of her power, but not her principles. She
became the first in the world to declare the freedom of religion at
Torda in 1568. Unitarians adhere to the "Torda Dictum". In San Jose,
American Unitarians established partner Churches in Transylvania (a
thousand year old part of Hungary, which was stripped off from
motherland and given to Romania in Trianon1920). Hungary lost
many wars and revolutions, but she never allowed the torch of her
liberty to be snuffed out. Liberty is life! - said Lajos Kossuth, when
invited to address the American Senate, after one of our many failed
revolutions in the 19th century and in 1956: life is nothing without
liberty said the freedomfighters of Budapest, as they set out forty
years ago against 16 Russian tank battalions to mortally wound
Soviet Communist tyranny. Hungary has given much to America. Not
only the Statue of Liberty stands on the Foundation erected by the
Hungarian journalist Pullitzer, but San Francisco Bay Area would be
poorer if Szathmary, the nobleman, did not bring grapevine from
Hungary! Today, as 1100 years ago, the state of Hungary is once
again preparing to enter Europe. But the state of Hungary does not
coincide with the nation. Hungary is the only country on this planet,
which is surrounded on all her borders, by her former self, `by the
severed (unthinkable!) 2/3rd of the former Hungary. Hungarians are
the largest minority in Europe, not because they left their homeland,
but because borders been redrawn and artificial states (Yugoslavia,
Czechoslovakia) were invented by distant and ignorant politicians.
With these artificial states fallen apart, Hungary still has not been
reunited with her former parts of a thousand years. It would be a
marvelous birthday gift to the nation of Lajos Kossuth, Albert
Szentgyorgyi and John Von Neumann, if the Hungarian communities
in the successor states were given the right to maintain their
heritage, if their churches and schools were returned, if they were
allowed to use their mother tongue, if they were given the same
cultural autonomy, which are even guaranteed even to the warring
parties in Bosnia. We hope and pray, that the politicians of Europe
and the US, especially in an election year, will also focus on the
universal collective human rights of all minority groups. That would
be the best birthday gift for 10 million Hungarians in present-day
Hungary, 16 million of Hungarians worldwide, 1.58 million who live
in the USA, and 10,000 who live in San Francisco Bay Area.
