It seems to me that we can pull the discussion of what to name the group
back to the idea of comparing Hungary with other countries...and also to
the development of what has been going on here.
What happened in 1990? First things first, while my friends
(Hungarian/Magyarok) grumbled, the first great free Parliament (in a long
time) concerned itself with symbols, statues and street names.
To know yourself, you must name yourself.
It seems that a few people on the list are having a collective identity
crisis, or perhaps, it's time for a bloodless revolution...

I apologize for letting the end of my last message descend into
bitterness, and to use the wrong word to boot - "scorn" when I meant
something like 'admonish'. Maybe it's time to introduce the perfectly
good magyar ige "fedd" into the English language ;-<...

I have a feeling that guys like this would be flashers in real life
except they lack the courage for it. So the Internet provides an
alternate where even cowards can play. Flashing with words, that is.
Don't you just pity them?

Well Julie,

This month's discussion centres around whether the name should be
Hungarian so that Yanqui protocapitalists wishing to invest their Dollars in
 poor
Hungarian enterprises would be able to feel the pulse of all the folks on the
 list
and then decide to invest in the Czeck republic. Then again it could be called
Magyar so that all the emigres could feel at one with the old empire, and
 reminisce
about fish paprikash and fogash.

Last Month's topic was about whether Hungarians (and Im not sure if it
w
 as
ever debated if Magyars also fitted in) came from some obscure province in
 Northern
China, or from Attila the Hun(garian). This was great for all those wild
 theories that
state we all come from the planet Altair, and that when they threw the celestia
l
 garbage
over-board we were in it somewhere.

Oh yes then there was an interesting story about when some famous Hunga
r
 ian
King (one of the 7 tribes I think) was buried in the middle of the Tissa [(Cat
 Stephens
song Teaser and the Firecat suddenly came to mind) - perhaps the fact that he i
s
 now
a muslim was of relevance <grin>], anyway so this king got burried in the Tissa
 (which
was conveniently diverted - come back Moses all is forgiven!!), then all his
 soldiers killed
each other and the last one commited suicide so that the secret would remain a
 lovely
legend to tell over a glass of Unicum.

So as you can see there are a variety of subjects discussed, to find ou
t
  a more
objective summary of the list (than provided by this sarcastic Angol)you should
 send a
message to the listserv as follows:-

mail

index [ this sends you a list of archives on a monthly basis, and then you send
 the message]

get HUNGARY LOG9502C

[ or whatever the file you are interested in is, and it will come back in a day
 or so]

One topic that has not yet developed is what smiley to use IMHO ( ;<{ )
 is OK

+ - Subject: What do we call ourselves, and where do we com (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

Pardon me saying so but these are fairly profound questions

Now in an old civilization (like wot we Angols is), there is an easy answer to
these questions. It is of course to set up a Royal Commission - this takes
about three years of hearing all sides of the argument and finally in a
 pragmatic
fashion, picking an answer that no one would even have dreamt of, and thus by
annoying both sides, achieving the political aim of uniting them - ah politics
aint it wunnerful.

Bearing this old adage of unite and rule by division, I propose that the "List"
 votes
on what they think of my 'umble suggestion for the new name for the new name
for the "List" :-

Soc.Cult.Zza.Zza

(this is the one Hungarian name every-one seems to have heard of - OK OK it
 could
have been Biro, Von Neumann, Rubic, or Teller - but how many of them have given
you a laugh recently!)

Yes I know you might get some Cult and Anti-cult types subscribing but they
 might
have an angle on where the Magyar/Hungarian tribe came from

This of course brings me to the second question - where did we come from? Well
 as
I was toolin round the Sarf Circular in Lunno in my Automobile it hit me (yer,
 you know
wot I mean.. )the answer is Transylvania, so what I hear you mutter at your
 keyboard...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show ( as good a guide to things Hungarian I have
 found)
explained that those (pardon my language) Transexual Transylvanians came from
 the
Planet Transexular !!!!! and of course Transylvania once belonged to Greater
 Magyarland

Voila (or whatevet the Hungarian for that word is) all is revealed so now we ca
n
 get back
to slagging off politicians, running down foreigners, and blaming Gypsies for
 everything
(oops they come from Transylvania dont they ... er well yes back to the
 drawing board
on that one)

HON. ROBERT K. DORNAN

OF CALIFORNIA

in the House of Representatives

Thursday, February 2, 1995

Mr. DORNAN. Mr. Speaker, the American Hungarian Congress and the
Hungarian National World Council held a joint meeting and conference in
Cleveland, OH on November 25, 1994, and passed a joint resolution
regarding the sad situation of the Hungarian and other minorities in
Transylvania--Romania.

While I realize the practical obstacles standing in the way of such a
resolution of the ethnic question in Transylvania, I would like to call the
attention of my colleagues to the thoughtful and bold proposal the
resolution is advancing. There is no question that the tangled ethnic issue
which the post-Communist government of President Iliescu seems to be
incapable, or even unwilling, to solve, needs courageous and new initiatives
which can point the way to a resolution which all the parties are able to live
with.

AMERICAN HUNGARIAN CONGRESS AND HUNGARIAN NATIONAL
WORLD COUNCIL RESOLUTION

Whereas, the history of the Transylvanian Hungarians, ever since they were
separated from the Hungarian nation by the Trianon and Paris peace
treaties and became a national minority in Romania, clearly demonstrates
that they can neither individually nor as an ethnic group exist in Romania
under acceptable humane conditions; and

Whereas, in addition, as a result of Romanian nationalist discrimination
and persecution, the Csango-Hungarians of Moldavia are no longer listed
on official Romanian statistics; and

Whereas, fifty years ago, about one million Jews lived in Romania, and
today they number less than 20,000; and

Whereas, fifty years ago, about 800,000 Germans lived in Romania, and
today their number is about 100,000; and

Whereas, at the present time, the number of Romas (Gypsies) in Romania
is about five million, but Romanian statistics recognize only a few hundred
thousands; and

Whereas, since the Peace Treaty Diktat of Trianon, Hungarians who
perished in Romanian internment camps or fled the country are estimated
to be more than one million;

Therefore, in the knowledge of the above facts, the Hungarian National
World Council and the American Hungarian Congress request, in the name
of the more than two million Hungarians living in the United States of
America, and other countries of the Western world; that be it

Resolved, that the Government of Hungary and the other governments of
the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe secure the continued
existence of the 2.5 million Transylvanian Hungarians (who were separated
from their Hungarian motherland by the Trianon and Paris peace treaties)
in accordance with European democratic norms (e.g. Switzerland and
Belgium), so that within the framework of an independent Transylvania the
Hungarians, Germans, Romanians, Gypsies and other ethnic groups may
exercise their self-determination and rights as associated nations.

In witness thereof, signed in Cleveland, OH in the United States of
America, this 25th day of November, 1994.

Another find in the Congressional Record:

HON. TOM LANTOS

OF CALIFORNIA

in the House of Representatives

Wednesday, January 25, 1995

Mr. LANTOS. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor and commend Ms. Anita
Semjen, director of the Cultural Exchange Foundation, for her
exceptional
efforts in keeping alive the memories of the victims of the
Holocaust.

Ms. Semjen is currently the director of the Cultural Exchange
Foundation,
a Washington, D.C.-based, non-profit organization promoting
Hungarian-American cultural exchanges. Her most recent effort involve
`Victims and Perpetrators,' an exhibition which is scheduled to be
shown in
Budapest, Hungary on February 26, 1995. Following its presentation at
the
Budapest Jewish Museum, the works will be displayed in several major
United States cities, eventually entering the collection of the
United States
Holocaust Memorial Museum.

`Victims and Perpetrators' presents the works of Ilka Gedo and Gyorgy
Roman, artists who lived through the Hungarian Holocaust, in which
some
500,000 Hungarian Jews were taken to German concentration camps and
murdered. Ilka Gedo's drawings from the Budapest ghettos expose
painful
memories of the past.

Gyorgy Roman, reputedly Hungary 's most emulated artist, has sketched
scenes from court proceedings of the war criminal trials. Ms. Anita
Semjen
found Roman's sketch work through a combination of determination and
luck, which has led to its first ever public showing in `Victims and
Perpetrators.' Both artists' works are unique for their extraordinary
insight
coupled with their artistic value and intimacy of perception.

Ms. Semjen demonstrates an admirable understanding of the arts and
peoples of both the United States and Hungary . At a time when
innocent
peoples still fall victim to religious and ethnic persecution, Ms.
Semjen's
exhibition rekindles our often passive conscience.

Therefore, today, Mr. Speaker, more than 50 years after the tragedy
of the
Hungarian Holocaust, I invite my colleagues to join me in honoring
the
diligent efforts of Anita Semjen in reminding us of the grievous
memories
of the past and of the lessons history teaches us in the interminable
fight
against cruelty and oppression.

travel very poorly over netnews (for unclear reasons but quite
consistently). Make the posts separately, or better yet mail to the list,
IF you feel the need to include both - that way it should go at normal

+ - question about article ('94 elections) (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

Could I interupt the exciting discusion about USENET nomenclature to ask a
question about last May's elections? I wonder if anyone would have any
comment on the following:

I was reading an article yesterday by Andrew Arato which appeared in the Fall
1994 issue of _The Hungarian Quarterly_, which included the following: (p.7)

"[After the first round] The right wing parties...now faced the following
difficult situation. The Socialists....were on the verge of attaining an
absolute majority in parliament. But if they did not suceed in this, they
would have to form a coalition with the SZDSZ, with whom they were almost
certain to then have the two-thirds majority needed to modify the
constitution and to pass or change important two-thirds legislation....The
MSZP was leading in most individual contests, but in the bulk of these the
SZDSZ was a strong second and was calling for the support of the voters of
the other parties to help stop an overly large socialist victory. However, to
the strategists and the publicists of the right, all the way from Istva1n
Csurka to the people on the margins of FIDESZ.....the greater danger was now
seen not as the 50 percent+1 of parliamentary seats for the socialists, but
rather the two-thirds +1 for the MSZP and the SZDSZ together. Since, they
reasoned, only a crushing defeat of the SZDSZ could stop them from joining a
coalition, the main enemy....was now in the liberal centre and not on the
left. In their hour of electoral disaster, more and more of the leading right
wing politicians hoped for a purely socialist government and even recomended
voting socialist where a right wing candidate was week"

The author does not site any sources for the above, and I have never before
seen any suggestion that such a stratagy was followed. (Obviously if it was,
it backfired.) My question is this: Has anyone seen it asserted anywhere else
that such a stategy was followed? If so, where? I would also appreciate any
comments on how plausible you think it is.
