For those of you, who have not read or heard - and even to those of you,
who are uninterested, I think that you will be at the least glad for
Hungary today if not proud.  They are the 97 World Champs.  (47
countries/800+athletes). Individual medals are forthcoming ... right after
I too, get some sleep and the team is safely on the plane homebound in
about four hours.   Display of emotions indescribable!  You might well
catch them on CBC.  Many thanks to those who took the time to support them.
 Special thanks again to Farkas G., for diligent updates which *were* btw;
read by all (including the reporters writing them).

Thanks again!  A weekend to be proud of indeed.

This list is very anemic lately.  I am trying to throw in a topic.  Over
a year ago, I said something about the irreconcilable difference in
Canadian and Hungarian mentality.  Everybody jumped on me, Aniko
declaring that I was out to lunch.  Let me tell you the following story:
my daughter and son-in-low organized a party in honour of his
grandmother's 80th birthday.  I decided to make something for the lady
and called my in-law.  Styles and colours were discussed.  I was finally
asked to make a short-sleeved cardigan in a bright colour.  I duly went
to select a nice yarn and crocheted the cardigan.  We were about 25
people at the party, including 8 children, all close family.  Granny
didn't want to open the presents - she said she felt unconfortable before
all those people (her children, grandchildren, sisters, cousins and
spouses).  Two weeks went by.  I never heard from her.  This Saturday
there was another party in honour of my son-in-law's stepfather's 50th.
Granny was there.  She happily hugged and kissed me, but there was no
mention made of my gift.  Granny is in terrific shape both physically and
mentally.  In another episode, we were invited to a friends grandson's
bris.  I knew about the coming child and knitted a nice hooded jacket.  I
knew that at such occasions presents are not opened.  However, it took
exactly 4 months to receive a thank you note.

Well, maybe this is all OK according to Canadian etiquette.  I, with my
European background, am deeply hurt.  I will never bother again to spend
any time or money for a meaningful present to a Canadian.

How wonderful, a true reason to celebrate.  Thank you for the message, this
achievement comes at a good time for Hungary with the 1100 year
celebration.  It shows that Hungarians truly have staying power and a
winning attitude.

Dear Bela:

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for contacting me to
express your concerns about my visit to the Slovak Republic.

On Monday, August 18, I met with representatives from all parties of the
Slovak Government, and also had a two hour meeting with very frank
discussion with Prime Minister Meciar.  I heard from everyone about all
the problems of the Slovak Government.

While the official government press made their own interpretations of my
meeting Mr. Meciar, permit me to tell you myself what I said.

I stated that, as Mr. Meciar is the current Prime Minister, there is no
one else who can speak at this point to reconfirm to the U.S. Congress,
to the world and to everyone watching that he and his government are
committed to certain principles.

I stated that Mr. Meciar must clearly say that he supports a
constitutional government, the democratic process, respect for human
rights, and the right of all citizens to express their opinion.  He must
follow these words with a plan of action.  The world is now waiting for
him to provide this leadership.

I also made it clear he must make these statements over and over again
and follow it with action.  These same sentiments must also be stated
and repeated by his cabinet, the Parliament and the opposition.

Let me assure you that at no point have I endorsed Mr. Meciar's
government, the HZDS or any other party or group.  The U.S. Ambassador
to Slovakia, Ralph Johnson, was with me at every moment and can confirm
what I said.

In closing, let me also assure you that I will continue working in the
United States Congress to support the Slovak people and ensure that they
be given a chance to join the international community of democratic
nations.
