Most of those killed are reported to have been older women and very young children. Germany: Opposition leader survives assassination attempt BBC DW RA RNW Oskar Lafontaine, the Social Democratic Party candidate for Chancellor of the Federal Republic of (West) Germany, narrowly survived an assassination attempt following a campaign rally in Cologne Wednesday evening. The 46-year-old "shadow Chancellor" (DW) was stabbed in the neck with a knife by a 42-year-old woman identified as a convicted arsonist and psychiatric patient. DW reported that he lost a considerable amount of blood before he could be flown by helicopter to a hospital. Reports this morning indicate that his condition has been upgraded from critical to serious, and that he is expected to recover fully. Israel: Peres fails to form new Government BBC RNW Labor Party leader Shimon Peres is expected to inform President Chaim Herzog that he has failed in his attempt to form a new coalition Government. Herzog is then expected to invite acting Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir to try to form a new Government. Israel: Palestinians killed in occupied Gaza BBC Two Palestinians were killed and as many as 90 more were injured when Israeli security forces opened fire on a procession of Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip who were celebrating the end of Ramadan and shouting nationalist slogans. Lithuania: Shortages, measures reported BBC The BBC reports a Radio Vilnius account of increasing shortages of goods and the introduction by the Lithuanian Government of emergency measures including the centralization of all resources and the rationing of basic goods. Nicaragua: de Chamorro inaugurated BBC RA RNW Violeta Barrios de Chamorro was inaugurated as President Wednesday. In her inaugural address, she told her audience, "From today on, Nicaraguans will bury their weapons, not their sons." She also announced that Sandinista General Humberto Ortega Saavedra, brother of outgoing President Daniel Ortega Saavedra, would retain his role as head of the army and that she would serve as her own Defense Minister.
